Karen Roy has big plans for her ABLEnow account. As the newly crowned Ms. Wheelchair America, she is traveling the country to advocate for Americans with disabilities.

Donations from sponsors are helping to fund her ABLEnow account, which she’s using to pay for her qualified disability expenses related to Ms. Wheelchair America appearances and travel. During her reign, Karen expects to visit at least 15 states, and she also plans to speak to many groups closer IN her home state of Louisiana.

Karen is eager to serve the community and provide mentorship for those living with a disability. She is using her platform: “Stand For Life” to guide her advocacy efforts. Her focus is increasing access and education on the benefits of standing devices, functional electrical stimulation and other technology created to help those with disabilities gain function and stay healthier.

Karen uses a wheelchair for mobility because she has a spinal cord injury. She was shot in an armed robbery in 1987. However, she does not let the circumstances stop her. She lives life to the fullest and aims to shine a positive light on disabilities. Through advocacy and education, she sets an example for other individuals who also use wheelchairs for mobility.

ABLEnow is the official ABLE program of Ms. Wheelchair America, which recognizes the accomplishments of women who utilize wheelchairs for mobility. The non-profit has grown to include programs in more than 30 states and the District of Columbia. The state programs are staffed and coordinated by volunteers dedicated to increasing public awareness so that all citizens will be afforded the opportunities to lead productive and meaningful lives.
