Meet ABLEnow Customer: Evan

As a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Evan Wrinkle is accustomed to helping his clients with their taxes and financial needs. When it comes to his personal finances, Evan is thankful for the ability to save with ABLEnow.

Evan sustained a T12 spinal cord injury that left him paraplegic at age 21. His brother has autism. Both are ABLEnow customers.

“Saving in general is very important to me, and I'm thrilled to have a savings vehicle available that fits my lifestyle,” said Evan.

Since his accident, Evan earned bachelor's degrees in accounting and personal finance and became a CPA. He works in a mid-sized public accounting firm in Virginia. He’s also active in the United Spinal Association of Virginia and the Virginia Society of CPAs.

With his professional background, Evan has a unique perspective on the importance of the ABLE Act to the disability community. He shared that the ability to save without endangering need-based support gives people the freedom to prepare for surprise expenses. Also, the tax advantages help to offset extra medical costs.

Although Evan does not receive need-based aid, he still prioritizes saving and investing with ABLEnow. He explained that his disability can be expensive. Right now, he uses his ABLEnow account to pay for health insurance premiums. Longer term, Evan wants the ABLEnow account available if his health deteriorates to the point where he’s unable to work.

“If you qualify to open one, you should do so,” explained Evan. “Even if you don’t need to worry about losing need-based support, the tax benefits of the plan make it worth it.”
