Families come in many different shapes and sizes. ABLEnow has expanded the categories of family members who can open an ABLEnow account for an eligible individual.

In addition to parents, grandparents, siblings and spouses can open and manage their eligible family member’s ABLEnow account as the Authorized Representative of the eligible individual.

Simply select the appropriate option in the ABLEnow account application and follow the step-by-step instructions.

If an eligible individual cannot open the account, or would prefer to have assistance, an Authorized Representative can open and manage the account for them. Parents, grandparents, siblings and spouses can open an ABLEnow account by self-certifying their relationship* to the eligible individual. For these categories of family members, no documentation of the relationship is required during enrollment.

Authorized Representatives opening an ABLEnow account as the Legal Guardian, Care Representative, or Attorney in Fact acting under Power of Attorney for the eligible individual are required to upload the appropriate legal documentation electronically before being able to contribute or withdraw funds from an ABLEnow account or use the ABLEnow Card. These applicants will receive instructions to submit the required documentation during enrollment.

Remember, an eligible individual may only have one ABLE account at any time.

Additional information on opening an ABLEnow account is available in the Frequently Asked Questions.

*By opening an eligible individual’s ABLEnow account, the Authorized Representative is self-certifying that there is no other individual with a higher priority who is willing and able to open and manage the ABLEnow account as the Authorized Representative. The order of priority for eligible family members is given to the: 1) spouse, 2) parent, 3) sibling, 4) grandparent.
